How to Handle
"Supernatural" Events in Thrillers (the questions that can't be
easily explained, like Bobby's visions.)
I’ve written a total of seven books (only four of which are
publishable) and though there is usually a supernatural element in them, for
the most part the action takes place in the real world. And when it comes to my
supernatural twists, I guess I tend to be kind of an explainer.
In BREAKING GLASS, it’s the missing Susannah’s interest in
world religions and the occult that sparks Jeremy’s desperate prescription-drug
induced attempt to summon her from beyond the grave—and mostly to have his way
with her. Though I don’t refer to any scientific material for the spirit world
(after all, to be fair, there isn’t any reputable material) I did rely on
mythology and lore. I delved heavily into ancient Kabbalah rituals (there is no
raising of the dead in Kabbalah), blending them with Pagan rituals and
witchcraft. I read up on the old Jewish myths about dybbuks, restless spirits of
the departed that refuse to graciously depart.
In Vision, I tried a different approach. I did not rely on
mythology or folklore, and instead delved into the psychology behind
dissociative personality disorder (multiple personality disorder). In Bobby’s case
I wanted a quasi medical cause for his maladies. I don’t want to give away any
spoilers, but I did do a fair amount of research into a lot of Bobby’s medical
symptoms and got pretty creative with what I learned, threading the real with
the unreal.
I guess you’d say that is how I work—I build a plausible
world that seems very much like our own, then busily fill in the cracks with
strange, otherworldly caulking.
About Lisa:
Lisa Amowitz was born in Queens and raised in the wilds of
Long Island, New York where she climbed trees, thought small creatures lived
under rocks and studied ant hills. And drew. A lot.
Lisa has been a professor of graphic design at Bronx Community College where she has been
tormenting and cajoling students for nearly eighteen years. She started writing
eight years ago because she wanted something to illustrate, but somehow,
instead ended up writing YA. Probably because her mind is too dark and twisted
for small children.
BREAKING GLASS which was released July 9, 2013 from Spencer
Hill Press, is her first published work. VISION, the first of the Finder series
will be released in 2014 along with an unnamed sequel in the following year.
LIFE AND BETH will also be released in the near future. So stay tuned because
Lisa is very hyper and has to create stuff to stay alive.
